A Pet Is For Life And Great Fun

Pets are always a great source of fun, joy and excitement whether it’s a goldfish or a horse or, anything in between. Britain is a great lover of pets and has always had a history of keeping animals be it for work purposes or just for the pleasure of having animals around.

For myself and my family we have had pets all our lives. When I was young I had a dog and Guinea Pigs, later in life I acquired quite a menagerie ranging from Guinea Pigs, Rabbits, Dogs, Cats, Ducks, Chickens and even a Ferret at one point. They always have and, still do give me more in return than I can give them and the one thing I like most of all is that animals are always honest about their intentions. They have no hidden agendas and you know where you stand with them.

The picture at the top right of this site is one of my favourite dog 'Joe'. I got Joe when he was about a year old, his former keeper was unable to care for him properly owing to work commitments and other factors. I fell in love with him as soon as I saw him even though he had a reputation for eating through 'kitchen doors'.

Joe lived for about 12 years and was unfortunately taken by bone cancer eventually but, he lived a completely full and happy life. He played favourite uncle to all the other animals in our managerie and, the kittens, rabbits and guinea pigs used to snuggle up to him in front of the open fire. He was everybodies friend.

Animals love to play as much as we do, they may not always play the way we want them to but, they have a great sense of fun and adventure that more often than not can get them into trouble.

Pet Care

Pet Care is a great responsibility and when you first decide to take on that responsibility of looking after another living being, you have to decide what sort of animals you like then, you have to look at your own lifestyle and decide not only what sort of animal would fit into that lifestyle but also, that you will be able to take care of that animal in full, after all you will become responsible for the total welfare of that animal, not the other way round.

You will need to arm yourself with all the relevant information in how to care for this animal and learn to put the animals welfare first before going down the pub or to play video games etc. A good source for this sort of information is Pet Care Books, the RSPCA or the Blue Cross, they will advise you best not only on how to care for animals in general but also about illness in animals and how to take preventative measures.

Another source of good information locally is your Vet. Vets carry all sorts of information leaflets that are free and they will happily advise on the care of your pet. You should also register yourself with a local Vet once you have obtained your pet in order that they can keep you up to date with information on vaccinations etc.

The right food is a very critical factor in caring for an animal. If you feed them the wrong type of food you can easily cause severe digestive problems which will cause the animal severe discomfort and in extreme cases even death. Again, when you obtain your pet ask the people or shop that you are buying your pet from what they recommend as they will have already been feeding the animal for some time already. If after getting your pet home and you have been feeding it as initially advised but your pets is still having digestive problems then, consult your Vet.

In the main you should have years of fun and enjoyment with your pet and hopefully will not have to visit the vet too often except for the usual inoculations which are normally on an annual basis.

Pet Insurance is always a good consideration as vets bills can sometimes be quite high if your pet is unfortunately involved in an accident or suffers from a long term illness.
